Artist's Statement – Glass has always intrigued me, especially the materials' ability to convey pure color.  From the beginnings, working with stained glass, to the present, working with hot glass, we have considered ourselves colorists. Our current series takes advantage of the pure color of glass in the form of "shard drawings".  Shard drawings are basically abstract assemblages of colored glass shards, cane, stringer and murrini. The vessel's form becomes the canvas upon which the shard drawing is displayed.

Process Information – Colored spheres are blown in the traditional hot glass method.  Once cooled, these spheres are then cut and flattened in a fusing kiln. Principal colors and shapes are determined and then assembled. Next, secondary color elements i.e., shards, cane, stinger, and murrini are added to the design. Once the shards have been designed, they are fused.

The finished shard drawings is then heated to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit and placed on the blown vessel while still on the blowpipe.  The vessel and shard drawings are continually reheated and worked until they become one.  The piece is then transferred to a punty rod and a lip-wrap of color is applied to the piece and finished.
