The interaction between the natural world and the man-made world is deeply ingrained in her work, as is how society and media influence one’s psychology. Although these underlying themes are challenging and sensitive, she explores them through a yielding, deeply appreciative, organic lens. Regan graduated from the University of Colorado (Boulder Campus) with a BFA in 2000. She now teaches painting and drawing and continues to travel to Asia and Central America for inspiration. Process “I have an idea in mind before I begin the painting, and I take great pleasure in the process of exploring that concept. I will do a lot of research on my subject matter. I enjoy the challenging materials I work with, both the small margin for error and the intensity of the method. This process is balanced with quiet time shooting photographs, drawing patterns and sketching insects with meticulous anatomical detail.” “I work on either canvas or masonite, and I use both water-based oils and acrylic. I layer the piece using a variety of techniques, constantly adding and subtracting on the surface to achieve balance. The entire process of creating the 3-D pieces is extremely laborious. To preserve the mystery, I prefer to keep some of the technical details of the 3-D process a secret. I use many kinds of paper and fibers, a well as fabric, resin, found objects, and beautiful species of moths and butterflies. To ensure precision, I spread them myself for the 3-D paintings, or entrust the help of a trained entomologist.
